Backed by private-equity giant Sun Capital, Kell- wood CEO Mike Kramer, a former top executive at Apple and Abercrombie & Fitch, is scooping up promising brands whose selling prices have been hit with steep discounts in the lackluster economy, sources said.
With scads of Sun Capital money to spend, middle-market apparel giant Kellwood is looking to win some upscale cred by adding the likes of Rebecca Taylor (above) and her red-hot brand.
Kramer's buying binge is being bankrolled by Sun Capital honcho Marc Leder, who is looking for fresh places to invest more than $3 billion in investor cash, sources said.
Kramer told The Post yesterday he wasn't immediately able to comment.
Already Kramer has inked a deal to acquire Adam, a chic women's clothing label from up-and-coming New York designer Adam Lippes that operates a boutique in Manhattan's Meatpacking District, sources said.
While that deal may be announced as soon as today, sources said others could soon follow. Kramer is also in "advanced talks" to acquire Rebecca Taylor, an upscale label whose customers include celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Winslet, according to a person close to the talks.
