I’m cutting back on Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat

Johnny Vaughan, radio presenter and author
I won’t give up Using a fresh razor every time. You need a good shave. The blades work out really expensive, but a bad shave can ruin your day.
I’m cutting back on Cars. I just downsized my Maserati for a Fiat 500. When I drive around in it everyone is friendly because it puts you in the role of the underdog. It’s great to nip around in. The credit crunch will make people look at the value of things for what they are and ask: is it worth it? It’s like taking the label off a product.

I won’t give up Good underwear – it lasts. And high heels. They send out such a powerful message. My favourites are Christian Louboutin and
Charlotte Olympia.

Hair dryer
I’m cutting back on My weekly blow-dries at Paul Edmonds. Instead I maintain my hair with one haircut from my favourite stylist every five weeks, as her cut is so good it stays in great shape so I can manage it myself. And my 4pm Boost chocolate bars.

I won’t live without Frédéric Malle perfumes, Jo Malone candles, earl grey tea and laughter. As money gets tight the pressure to seize the moment and enjoy it, rather than squander it, is invigorating.
I’m cutting back on Impulse buying. I have always spent more but bought less. Now I want my purchase to feel worthy of the money spent, so I have invested in accessories – scarves from Louis Vuitton and Dries Van Noten; bangles from Sonia Rykiel, and earrings from Erickson Beamon.
As a working mother I used to shop when I had the opportunity – between appointments, after picking up the kids from school. I now try to make time to look properly and think about my purchase in a less pressured mode. I’ve bought less but am happier with the styles I have. I also look online at collections so I know what to aim for in the shops.

I won’t give up Ready-cut mangoes. Trying to cut one yourself is hellish; you get juice all over the carpet.
The other thing I could never say goodbye to is my hairdresser. I’d rather go hungry than have grey roots. Blow-dries, too. They transform your mind-set.
Bag
I’m cutting back on Handbags. The guilt was too much. I’ve got a great Pauric Sweeney bag already so I’m quite happy with that. I made the decision that the amount I was being asked to pay for them was almost obscene.

Jo Fairley

I won’t give up Massage, acupuncture and yoga. If you take care of yourself you won’t get sick. If those things save me one day off from work, they’ve paid for themselves.
I haven’t seen a doctor for 18 years. One frivolity I wouldn’t stop is buying a painting occasionally. It’s a ridiculous luxury, but they lift your soul and enrich your life. People see that as an indulgence, but in a way a great piece of art is sort of life affirming.
I’m cutting back on Buying any new clothes. I didn’t trawl the sales for another winter coat. There was a reason why no one bought the turquoise trapeze coat in the first place, so why would I want it in the sale? I’m enjoying not wasting time in the shops.

I won’t live without Second-hand cashmere. It started with an ex-boyfriend who had an amazing cashmere jumper. I missed it more than
him when we split up! I go to a great second-hand shop in Edinburgh – Armstrongs Vintage – and buy armfuls. I sometimes go to Primark or
Topshop but I feel so guilty, it robs me of the joy.

I’m cutting back on Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat. With lots of late nights and drinking, I use a lot. I’ve been trying to use cheaper brands, and they seem to work just as well. Although maybe that’s just my bad eyesight…
