AT £16 IT ASDA BE THE END OF COUTURE
After all, when a designer label look - a - like sitting toilet roll and lettuce, in your supermarket slightly lost? Cachet,
Yes, the purists think, cheaper version, cheaper, and not a patch on the original.
But we must hold on, when Kate moss Balmain dressed in a night, shoulders - seam burst. If the only cost £16 million, she may not like her, but when the price tag, you expect sports three zero more, your cash.
High Street 'interpretations' of designer labels are nothing new - in fact Topshop, New Look and M&S have even been forced to withdraw items that bore too close a resemblance to those by the likes of Chloe and Jimmy Choo.
But whereas when the economy was booming it was déclassé to wear anything but the real deal, now there's a reverse snobbery that compels you to flaunt your floundering finances (even if yours aren't actually floundering) for fear of seeming crass. Bargains, you see, are the new bling.
At a dinner party last week, I complimented a label-loving fashionista friend on her dress. 'Is it a TTD?' I asked, namechecking Roland Mouret's latest £645 design.
'God, no,' she laughed. 'It's a Zara rip-off. It's brilliant, isn't it?' I rest my case.
